How to contact someone on Shaadi.com without paying
Free accounts on India's big matrimony apps can do more than the upgrade screens suggest. Here is exactly where the limits are, and the free ways to get a conversation started.
You have found a profile on Shaadi.com that feels right. You tap to message, and the app asks you to upgrade. Before you pay, it helps to know exactly what a free account can already do, because it is more than most people think, and where the real limits are. This guide goes through Shaadi.com, BharatMatrimony and Jeevansathi using their own help pages (checked on 21 October 2026), then covers the free ways to get a conversation going.
The short answer
- Sending interest is free everywhere. On Shaadi.com, BharatMatrimony and Jeevansathi a free member can send an interest (a ready-made "I like your profile" message) and accept or decline the interests they receive.
- Starting a chat or a personal message usually needs a paid plan. BharatMatrimony says plainly that a free member cannot start a chat. Shaadi.com lists starting chats and emails as Premium benefits. Jeevansathi lists personalised messages and chat as premium.
- Phone numbers are the main thing you pay for. On all three, seeing someone's number is a paid feature, usually metered as "contact views".
- A free member can sometimes reply. BharatMatrimony's FAQ says free members can respond to personalised messages and chats from paid members, so if the other person pays, you may not need to.
- There are free routes outside the apps too. One of them is Lettheworld, which lets someone knock using your profile ID and opens a free chat once you accept.
What 'free' means on a matrimony app
Matrimony apps split contact into two steps. The first step, the interest, is free and is a fixed message: the other person learns that you liked their profile and can accept or decline. The second step, real conversation (your own words, a chat, a call or a phone number), is where the paywall sits. Our price guide explains why: unlocking contact is how these platforms earn most of their money.
That design has a consequence worth knowing before you pay. If you upgrade but the other person is a free member, the conversation can still stall, because their side has limits too. Several platforms sell higher tiers partly to fix exactly that.
Shaadi.com: what a free member can do
Shaadi.com's membership FAQ lists what a free account includes. In short, you can create a profile with up to 20 photos, set partner preferences, search using up to 26 parameters, express interest in members you like, get notified and accept or decline members who contact you, and shortlist or ignore profiles. Its contact FAQ says contacting members by expressing interest is free, and that accepting an interest means you agree to communicate with that member.
What needs Premium on Shaadi.com
- Starting chats and emails. Shaadi.com's chat FAQ says Premium members can initiate chats; its homepage says paid membership lets you initiate and respond to messages, depending on the plan.
- Phone, email and SMS. Premium is described as the way to connect directly over phone, email or SMS, and to see contact numbers.
- A "Premium Interest". Paid members can attach their profile to an interest and send it by email to make it stand out.
Two free features most people miss
- Request Contact Details. If a member has not added or verified a phone number, you can send a request from their profile. They see it in their inbox and can approve it by verifying their number. Request Photo works the same way for profiles without a photo, though you need a photo of your own first.
- The other person's plan can help you. Shaadi.com's support pages say the Diamond Plus and Platinum Plus plans let free members view that member's contact details. If the person you like is on one of those, you can see their number without paying.
One thing Shaadi.com will not do: its FAQ says customer support is not authorised to contact a member on your behalf.
BharatMatrimony: what a free member can do
BharatMatrimony's FAQ (which also covers its community sites) is unusually direct about the split between free and paid accounts.
- Express Interest is free. It sends an automated message saying you are interested, without revealing your contact details. The FAQ says you can send up to 250 interests in 12 hours and 500 in 24 hours, and you are notified when someone accepts or declines.
- A free member cannot start a chat. The FAQ answers this in one word: no. Only a paid membership lets you initiate chat.
- But a free member can reply. Among the benefits of a free account, BharatMatrimony lists responding to personalised messages and chat from paid members.
- Phone numbers are paid only. Only paid members can view another member's verified mobile number, call, or send a single SMS. Free members also cannot see your mobile number or horoscope.
Jeevansathi: what a free member can do
Jeevansathi's owner, Info Edge, describes its model as free to list, search and express interest, and paid to get contact information. Its App Store listing puts viewing phone numbers and email IDs, and sending personalised messages and chat, under premium. Its membership page lists viewing other members' contact details, and showing yours to them, among the reasons to pay. Jeevansathi does not publish a clear rule on whether a free member can reply to a paid member's message, so check inside the app before you assume either way.
Side by side: free accounts compared
| Send interest | Accept or decline | Start a chat | Reply to a paid member | See phone number | |

| Lettheworld | Knock (free) | Accept, ask questions, ignore or block | Free, once they accept | Free | Only if you both choose to share |
Legitimate free ways to get a conversation started
- Make your own profile worth accepting. An interest is a single tap, so the person deciding looks at your profile instead. Shaadi.com says adding a photo can raise profile views by up to 7 times and responses by up to 10 times. Fill in family, work and preferences honestly.
- Send interests, and accept the ones you like. Acceptance is the free signal that both of you want to talk. Once it exists, a paid member on either side can open the conversation.
- Use the request features. On Shaadi.com, Request Contact Details and Request Photo are free ways to ask for more without paying.
- Let the paying side lead. On BharatMatrimony, if the other person is a paid member, they can message you and you can reply for free. There is no harm in one of you paying and the other not.
- Check whether their plan shares contact details. On Shaadi.com, Diamond Plus and Platinum Plus members' contact details are visible to free members.
- Ask for their profile ID and use a free service. Lettheworld (below) lets you knock on someone using the profile ID shown on their matrimony profile. Our profile ID guide shows where to find it on each app.
What not to do
- Don't hide a phone number in your bio. BharatMatrimony's FAQ asks members not to display contact details anywhere except the space provided, and says breaking its profile rules can get a profile rejected. Shaadi.com also screens new and edited profiles before they become fully visible.
- Don't pay anyone who offers to "unlock" contacts for you. Jeevansathi warns about copycat sites and people who call asking for membership fees on its behalf. Pay only inside the official app or website.
- Don't send money to a match, for any reason. Every platform's safety page says this. Our checklist on spotting fake matrimony profiles covers the common scams.
Where Lettheworld fits
Lettheworld is a free, consent-first way to start talking to someone you saw on a matrimony or dating app: Shaadi.com, Jeevansathi, BharatMatrimony, M4Marry, Bumble, or any other. It does not replace those apps (you still find people there), and it is not affiliated with any of them. Here is how it works:
- You register your profile ID from the app you use, and optionally your bio. Your bio is turned into a fingerprint in your browser; the text is never uploaded.
- Someone who saw you on that app types your profile ID into Lettheworld (or pastes your bio, if no ID is shown) and knocks. An ID is better, because two people can write similar bios.
- You see their first name, their profile picture if they added one (blurred until you tap it), which of your profiles they found, and when.
- You choose: accept and a chat opens at once, ask them up to 5 questions first, ignore the knock, or block them. They are never told if you ignore or block.
- Photos, full names and phone numbers are shared step by step, and only when you both agree.
Searching alone tells nobody anything, and there is nothing to buy: Lettheworld is completely free right now, with no paid plans and no limits on messaging.
